John E. McCarthy, the president of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc., Surface Transit, Inc., Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc., and several other bus and bus-related companies, dies following an operation at St. Clare's Hospital in New York at age 65. He had been Fifth Avenue Coach's president since 1939 (when it was still the Fifth Avenue Coach Company), and from that year was also president of the affiliated New York City Omnibus Corporation and its subsidiaries Madison Avenue Coach Company, Inc. and Eighth Avenue Coach Corporation, both of which would be folded into NYCO in 1951. As head of New York Management Ownership Corporation, Mr. McCarthy presided over the buyout of FACCo and NYCO from the owner of both companies, Chicago-based Omnibus Corporation; that November, NYCO acquired FACCo. On June 1, 1956 the firm became Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc., and on Dec. 17 of that year the company acquired what became Surface Transit, Inc.
Among the innovations in the bus industry over which Mr. McCarthy presided was the first air-conditioned bus (3100) which first arrived in 1956; another bus (numbered 3200) likewise air-conditioned had to go elsewhere because of its width, and 10 out of an initial order of 20 'New Look' buses the company put out for in this year (the last delivered in his lifetime) would be air-conditioned. (The remaining 100, the last 50 of which were flagged as Surface Transit, would be ordered and delivered after his death.) He was also a virulent opponent of one-way traffic conversions; NYCO routes were among the most disproportionately affected by the changes in traffic patterns, some of which led to the elimination of a handful of routes (the next round of conversions, of Third Avenue to one-way northbound and Lexington Avenue to one-way southbound, will occur July 17). |
