77, WABC used to be my favorite station in the '50's and '60's...
And when I moved 'out west' in the early '70's, I would periodically 'come home' for holiday or vacation visits (by bus), I would turn on my transistor radio, and would begin picking up its powerful clear channel, 50,000 watt signal, somewhere in Indiana during the night, and 'the beacon' would guide me home....just hearing its famousl jingle would make me feel that I was already there....very nostalgic....

traildriver:
I also recall seeing TNJ buses with WABC placards as well, way back then!
My cousins John and Joe introduced me to WABC in the late 60's, when Mom and I would ride out to West Orange via a DE CAMP #22 (boarding at JSQ and alighting at Verona, and riding either a BRILL [until about 1966] or an Old Look!); when we stayed overnight, that meant some SERIOUS WABC listening!
I'd bunk in their room, and they'd have their radio (which looked like a huge DELCO spark plug!) on all night, and that meant listening to some great music (and commercials!) until Mr. Sandman decided to call.
I STILL remember a WABC commercial back then that blurbed an all-night record store, somewhere in Manhattan......that a record store could be open ALL NIGHT really got our interest!
When we spent a week up at my aunt and uncle's bungalow (up at Highland Lakes); my cousins had this huge radio that looked like it was surplus to a WW2 battleship......the tall antenna was well wrapped in some crinkly aluminum (!!) and, dang, we got 77 WABC good and clear!
Back at home, in Union City, I listened to WABC at night with my trusty transistor radio (which I STILL have!) stashed under my pillow.
Just looking at those vintage WABC posters on those equally classic New York buses really brings back some great old memories........cool MUSIC and cool BUSES........aaaahh, take me back, take me back........
