I know where the A&S store was in Babylon, but where was/is Crown Manor.

As far as A&S being the destination---great piece of product placement.

ECA,

I've had this Crown Manor question come up before and the best I can say is that I believe it to be some kind of development in the Deer Park area (it actually sounds like a nursing home!).

Best regards and Happy New Year to you and the family.

I became curious about the Crown Manor sign, as I thought I knew all neighborhoods on Long Island! Please take a look at the current schedule and map for Suffolk bus route S-35, linked here
http://www.sct-bus.org/links/lrgprnt_schedules/s35_lrgprnt.pdf

An older thread on BusTalk identified Crown Manor as the triangle at the north end of that route map. Unless I am mistaken this is exactly the same route as that on the photo of bus 317 a few posts back. We have had this discussion about A & S before, but years ago I did visit A & S in the northwest corner of the South Bay Shopping Center on Montauk Highway, west of the village of Babylon. Since A & S left, the space has had various tenants, and I don't know who now occupies it. I prefer Panera's, a few stores away in the same center.

The roller sign is a rather less-used format. It gives both terminals, so the operator does not have to change the sign at the destination.

N4 Jamaica and all:

I think you maybey be correct. The Map refers to the bus going form Lindenhurst to Crown Manor and then to West Babylon. Yet the map doesn't have an arrival time in CM, nor is the name shown on the map. Strange oversight.

To definitively clear up this mystery, I have sent an e-mail to the Town of Babylon historian tonight and will await a response.

BTW, I haven't been in that shopping center recently since I live on the north shore. The last time I was on Montauk Highway in that area is when my wife and I went to see a movie in the Loews (?) Multiplex just to the east. What a dump! Hopefully it will follow the lead of the Babylon Bow TIE theater in Babylon Village and close its doors.

Love Panera, though I haven't dined in that location

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall, take note of addition to Leigh's Transportation.

Seen sometime in the sixties at its company facility is fleet #47 - a 1959 International Harvester model 'B' long wheelbase chassis carrying a school bus body of unknown origin and operating for Clara D. Leigh DBA Leigh's Transportation of Amityville, New York.

While the focus of this post has already been listed by our learned colleague S-60 To Smith Haven Mall along with certain historic data, I would take the opportunity to amend that information here as well as presenting a view of the subject for posterity.

Seen in a rather unusual and interesting livery in September of 1975 at its company facility in Babylon, New York is fleet #60 - a 1957 51 passenger GM Coach modeled as a TDH 5106 operating for Inter County Motor Coach of that central Long Island town.

According to the destination sign it would appear as though the bus has been leased or is contracted with a church or parochial school and that the logo just aft of the front wheel house may be that of the institution.

As listed, #60 eventually went to Valley Transit of Appleton, Wisconsin and then in 1994 to a private collector in that state followed in 2003 by transfer to other unknown private hands.

However, the Motor Bus Society Directory of Preserved Coaches dated October, 1989 tells a slightly different story in which the bus was sold to my good friend, associate, restorer and collector Chet Furmanak of Paramus, New Jersey.

Conversely though, Ohio Museum of Transportation's records indicate that bus modeler Brian Cooper was the recipient.

I suppose that, while we will have to rely on the word of someone who is familiar with the bus, I can say that it is no longer in the hands of Mr. Furmanak who I believe sold his 'mint' collection some years ago.

However, the Motor Bus Society Directory of Preserved Coaches dated October, 1989 tells a slightly different story in which the bus was sold to bus model maker Brian Cooper of Maryland and then to my good friend, associate, restorer and collector Chet Furmanak of Paramus, New Jersey.

Where it is presently is questionable because I believe that Mr. Furmanak sold his 'mint' collection sometime in the mid nineties.

Intresting that there seems to be two diffrent histories of what happened to the bus. My first thought is that maybe the history I found on the bus is wrong or maybe the person who wrote the history that I found didn't know it's full history.

Last March Mr. L found a photo of Babylon Transit 1960 GM TDH4517 #420, which brought to question it's history, well I just happened to find a photo recently of the same exact bus taken in 1981 at the Inter-County/Babylon Transit yard parked next to a bus numbered 421. Photo courtesy of Mel Bernero.

Here is also another photo of preivously posted ICMC #106, taken at the same time as the photo of #420. Photo also courtesy of Mel Bernero.

S-60 To Smith Haven Mall,

This one is a real shot in the dark because I'm unsure of the location but I've taken a stab at it and have begun at the most logical place.

Seen in January of 1971 in airport parking lot service (possibly MacArthur at Islip L.I.) is fleet #6042 - a 51 passenger GM Coach modeled as a TDH 5105 built sometime between 1953 and 1959 and one of at least two (with the other at right of frame) operating for the Long Island Bus Company, Inc. (LIBCO)

The aftermarket Thermo-King air conditioning and four digit fleet numbers tell me that these buses may have come from a large southern tier property.

Perhaps one of our many learned readers will recognize #6042's livery which probably was never changed by LIBCO.

Thanks.

Joe,

It says 'Between Terminal And' with listing of lot numbers below.

Something else bothers me; the two sets of numbers below the aft section of the first paired sash look like they might be phone related.

I do remember that there once was a 'Primrose 5' somewhere around town but the NY prefix on the lower one beats me (they could also have been left over from the previous owner.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

I realize that much can change in the 40+ years since the picture was taken, but I am not sold on the idea that the location is ISP.

When I did a search for LI Bus Co, nothing turned up. If the telephone # is Primrose 5, that translates out to a 775 exchange. I think that the exchange is in Nassau County, not Suffolk.

My gut reaction is that the parking lot is too big for ISP, especially since the airport was basically for commuters and the buses don't appear to have any capacity for luggage. Also I started flying out of the airport around 1981 and there were no shuttle buses eve visible. The airport is so small that all parking lots are walkable from the terminal. It would be a waste of funds to use transit buses rather than airporter vans.

Another issue is that I don't think that there are many trees in the area. Also if you look deep in the background on the left side of the picture beyond the fence, I think that there is a fishbowl in a green livery backed up to the other side. Perhaps its a hint.

Although the buses are registered in NY, how do we know that it is ISP they're servicing. Could be under contract to another airport somewhere in NY.
