If the focus of the image below looks familiar especially to the New York crowd it should be because its original destination was to be the Big Apple.
Seen at a yard of the Miami Transit Company is fleet # 5200 - a 1950 49 passenger Mack modeled as a C-50 and one of twenty likenesses numbered 5200 to 5219 delivered to that Sunshine State city.
These C-50's, lovingly dubbed as 'Bingham Class Macks', were part of a 400 bus order originally designed by Col. Sidney H. Bingham of New York City's Board of Transportation (BofT) basically to support conversion of the last of the traction lines in Brooklyn.
#5200 to #5219 were diverted from the assembly line directly to Miami as a favor by New York to help to fill in after a loss to fire of over seventy of their buses and were so sorely needed that they immediately hit the streets while still in BofT colors - Miami eventually purchased them and New York ordered replacements.
The Binghams were innovative with both front and rear double stream doors, sliding glass passenger and standee openings, all hydraulic systems in which troubles abounded through their lives, ambulance ready in time of war and a host of other features with most failing early on.
Note on #5200 that aside from repainting only a steel front bumper was added.
