Saw The French Connection on the tube last night and remember it well as it caused me nightmarish traffic tie ups in Manhattan as they were filming it!
Released by Twentieth Century Fox in late 1971 and starring Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider (of Jaws fame), the film tells the true story of a pair of New York City detectives in the Narcotics Bureau who stumble upon a drug smuggling scheme with a French connection.
New York City New Look GM and Flxible buses of the dark green era abounded in the Manhattan sequences with most of the GM's carrying 'Bat Wing' ads over the passenger windows (as seen below).
Interestingly, the famous subway chase, which took place along Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn was more ad-lib than scripted and one of the cars that Hackman crashes into was an unplanned accident but was kept in for its realism.
Highly recommended if you haven't already seen it.

BTW; this film has already been featured in this thread by Q65A with an in depth study of the buses and subway lines used.

JimmiB,
As long as we're discussing The French Connection I'll give you another couple of very interesting factoids;
In the scenes where the lunatic is shooting up the subway cars, the motorman was the real thing because the MTA would not permit a non employee at the controls (and he wasn't a bad actor either!).
The conductor who was shot was also the real thing because the actor for the part never showed up the day of the filming.
Regards,
Mr. 'L' |
