All:

The link in this post is for an outstanding photo page dedicated to the old Pennsylvania Station, now gone nearly 50 years.

In the third photo down from the top of the page, there is a (1920?) view showing a double decker heading south on 7th Avenue.

I have also seen several other photos from about that some time with double deckers running past Penn Station on 7th Avenue.

Previously, I had thought that double deckers only ran on 5th; any info is greatly appreciated.....thanks in advance.....

The 4 Washington Heights and the 15 Jackson Heights lines operated by 5th Avenue Coach Company terminated at 32nd St and 7th Ave. Theirdouble-decker buses operated via 5th Avenue, 34th St and 7th Ave to 32nd St.

Correct about the FACO #4 - its south terminal was at Penn, on the east side of 7th Ave. between 31st and 32nd Sts. The #4 buses did not begin using 34th St. on their southbound trips till the mid 1960s. The original route was on 31st St. westbound between 5th and 7th Avenues.

The #15 FACO Jackson Heights route did not begin using Penn Station as its south terminal till the 1980s at the earliest, when it had become a MABSTOA route and was rechristened Q32. Under FACO its south terminal was always at 25th St. and 5th Ave.

BTW, DD buses on 7th Avenue were the norm north of 110th St., on the FACO #2 route, which ran them till about 1951.

When Manhattan avenues were two-way,before WWII, FACCO Rt. 4 took an even more circuitous route. From 5 Av., it headed west on 32 St., south on 7 Av., west on 31 St., north on 8 Av.Returning, north on 8 Av., east on 33 St., south on 7 Av., east on 31 St. to 5 Av. It did a complete loop around Penna Sta.

Before WWII, FACCO Rt. 11 also served Penna. Sta. It ran from Wanamaker Terminal (Wanamaker's was a major dept. store near Astor Pl.-now K-Mart), along Fifth Ave. to Penna Sta.

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

I believe I'm correct when I say that Fifth Avenue Double Deck coaches ran on all of the company's routes including the #15 to Jackson Heights where they used the special Yellow Coach Model 720 (Queen Mary) which was six inches lower than the 735 (Queen Mary) to clear the Roosevelt Avenue El Line structure.

The only exceptions to the above were the Central Park cuts with low slung overpasses and the #16 Elmhurst Crosstown.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

FACC single deck Yellow Coaches (Models 728 and 740) also ran on the #6 72nd St. Crosstown and #20 57th Street Crosstown. Neither one used double deckers. The #6, despite its route name, did not go through Central Park, but swung around the south end of the park because there was never a sunken transverse road at 72nd Street, unlike those at 66th, 79th, 86th, and 96th Streets.

The routes at 79th, 86th, and 96th were part of FACC affiliate NYC Omnibus and of course used single deck Yellows similar to FACC's. 66th Street was originally part of Comprehensive Omnibus Corp.
