It's another sticky, hot and humid mid August day in 1977 in Virginia Beach, Virginia where we see fleet # 989 - a 1959 GM Coach Model TDH 4512 and one of fifteen likenesses numbered from 975 to 989 operating for Tidewater Regional Transit (TRT) but originally purchased by TRT's predecessor Virginia Transit Company of Norfolk.
In its semi retirement after many years of serious transit service, # 989 finds itself transformed into a 'hip' beach bus all gussied up in special paint, flags and surf board racks affixed to its side panels and is seen along the ocean on Atlantic Avenue shuttling its young surfing crowd to and from the beach.
The 'Sunshine Special' innovation was a clever way to minimize summer shore line traffic and parking problems and the hubbub that usually accompanied it.
Interestingly, # 989 was one of very few late model GM Old Looks that Virginia Transit did not retrofit with air conditioning.
Photo courtesy of 4509bus and is up for bid on eBay as item # 370618298734.
