The title of the article doesn't tell the whole story - Centro's driver and mechanics will get a sweeter deal in exchange for some pretty important changes in future retiree benefits and the ability to lay off full-time employees while keeping part-timers:

Pretty ugly union contract.
Mortgage tax to fund transit? That seems unusual to me.
I dunno, but it looks like a good time to rethink whether that $700-per year union dues are worth the bother.

The mortgage tax has been a staple of New York state transit funding for decades. As you can imagine, it was a swell idea when the housing market was going great guns but hasn't worked too well when real estate tanks and this has created an ongoing crisis since 2008. |
