Seen in downtown Portland, Maine on a warm and sunny afternoon in 1957 is fleet number 153 - a 1949 GM TDH 4509 and one of ten (151 to 160) delivered new to the Portland Coach Company in November of that year.
Portland Coach had a New York connection in that it was affiliated with the Queens Nassau/Steinway group of northern Queens and was the recipient of many of their surplus GM 4507's and 4509's as well as several ACF-Brill C-44's.
Founded in 1945 and successor to the street car operations of both Cumberland County Power and Light and Central Maine Power Company, Portland Coach continued transit service in Portland until 1966 when the Greater Portland Transit District was created.
# 153 was a 'phase 1' 4509 as can be seen by the absence of roof strengthening modifications that followed in later production.
Also of note is the giant metal Pepsi bottle top under the windshield that appeared on thousands of buses across the nation in that era.
