In a picture taken on sunny day sometime in mid thirties St. Louis we see fleet number 4703 - a 1933 Mack Model 6-BT-3S and one of a small number originally purchased by Peoples Motor Bus Company but operating under the flag of St. Louis Public Service.
With a capacity of 44 passengers and a weight of ten and a half tons, the Mack 'BT' was the largest and heaviest transit bus built in the 1930's time frame.
In fact, this bus was so heavy that it required 12 X 20 front tires and power assisted steering to carry its dual ignition 525 cubic inch - 126 horsepower six cylinder engine mounted over its front axle.
Double stream front and rear doors were standard along with an easily serviceable engine designed to roll out for replacement in a matter of an hour.
I can account for the illustrated #4703 and 4701 from another source but am uncertain as to exactly how many BT's St. Louis actually bought.
However, only 88 of the model were built between 1931 and 1936 with 50 to Brooklyn Bus Corporation, 19 to Boston Elevated Railway, 6 to the East Side and Comprehensive Omnibus Corporations and 2 to Travelers Bus Line of Queens leaving only eleven to other operators.
